Transmission beam‐profile variation thermally induced in CdS crystals is investigated at room temperature using a cw‐Ar + ‐laser and an electro‐optical modulator to produce pulses in the ms range. The formation and development of a plateau (or a ring) of the brightness in the transmitted beam are observed which strongly depends on the actual temperature of the sample. Calculations for a thin sample based on the two‐dimensional heat transport equation yield a good agreement with the experimental results.
