Varaksin and Shipitsin have recently presented a method for the calculation of the migration entropy ( s m ) of defects in solids. By applying this method to the case of a cation vacancy migration in NaCl and KCl values are obtained that significantly differ from the experimental data. On the other hand a model is suggested which leads to reliable s m ‐values for both materials i.e. NaCl and KCl. This model is based on a reasonable assumption stating that the absolute value of the “constant volume” migration entropy is appreciably smaller than that corresponding to “constant pressure”.
