The analysis of the observed absorption spectra of Dy 3+ ion in the widely used laser host LaF 3 is improved upon for D 3h site symmetry and the magnetic thermal and hyperfine properties of this system are investigated using the crystal field parameters obtained. Except for one excited state, the fit to all the observed Stark states of the ground multiplet is quite good. The results of the study are discussed in the light of available experimental information.
