A gradient expansion of free energy for simple metals is performed in the framework of the density functional method. The temperature behaviour of the surface tension is described reasonably for alkali metals and the temperature dependences are obtained for the electron work function. Effects due to the surface curvature are investigated. Some exact equalities are obtained which relate the first‐order curvature corrections to the surface tension and the work function to the characteristics of the flat surface. The first‐order curvature correction to the surface tension is calculated.
