The energy of a kink pair is calculated by approximating the configuration by piecewise straight segments and minimizing the total energy with respect to the geometrical parameters. The elastic energy and the core energy contribute both to the total energy by nearly the same amount. The expression for the elastic energy includes all interaction terms between the different segments and takes fully account of anisotropy. The increase in core energy corresponding to the Peierls energy enters as an open parameter which can be calculated realistically only by atomistic considerations but which may be determined experimentally from the results.
