Abstract An extrinsic surface optical polaron is investigated in a magnetic field perpendicular to the surface by canonical transformation method. Ground state energies are found for different values of the coupling constant ( a s ) and the reouced magnetic field strength (Λ). The motion in the z direction is completely isolated, and the energy due to localisation in the z direction is neglected, so that the ground state energy is due to 2D motion perpendicular to the magnetic field. The importance of the problem in relation to cyclotron resonance and magneto‐optics is discussed.
