The influence of photon recycling onto the minority carrier distribution in double heterostructures is investigated by means of variational calculations based on the unified formulation of the construction of variational principles by Gerjouy, Rau, and Spruch. The time‐independent variational treatment by von Roos is examinated and shown to be actually one for the effective carrier lifetime. This approach is applied to finite samples and numerical results for dependence of the influence of photon recycling upon the sample thickness are presented.
