Abstract The influence of the dipolar and quadrupolar scattering due to the 4f electrons on the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity in PrNi 5 is investigated. Using the experimental values of polycrystalline PrNi 5 and the isostructural LaNi 5 as well as the crystalline electric field splitting scheme it is found that the quadrupole scattering is the dominating one.
