Optical absorption spectrum of Cr 3+ ions doped in NH 4 Cl single crystals is studied in the temperature range from 300 to 143 K. From the observed spectrum it is concluded that Cr 3+ ions enter interstitially into NH 4 Cl lattice and the site symmetry of the Cr 3+ ions are lowered from octahedral to tetragonal. The crystal field and the tetragonal parameters are evaluated.
