The interaction of fast electrons with semi‐infinite metals is studied within the hydrodynamic model. Retardation effects, damping, and diffuseness of the electron density at the surface are included. The energy loss probability of surface plasmons is calculated for external electron beam travelling parallel to the metal surface. Numerical calculations are carried out for r s = 2 jellium.
