From a quantum‐field theoretical point of view the surface plasmon on a plane is treated as an extended object with an oscillating surface singularity created by the boson condensation of supplementary fields. Due to topological singularities the macroscopic equations describing free electromagnetic fields become inhomogeneous. The surface plasmon dispersion relation results from the steadiness of the surface impedance.
