Free‐carrier absorption coefficient of light is calculated for the case of quasi‐two‐dimensional (Q‐2D) semiconducting systems (of the kind of “quantum well” structures) assuming the conditions for highly degenerate carrier statistics are fulfilled. A comparison with recent results for the case of non‐degenerate carrier statistics is made: higher absorption coefficient for lower values of the quantum‐well width is predicted (as in the non‐degenerate case), but the absorption coefficient is lower for the degenerate carrier case.
