Raman spectroscopic measurements of the TO‐ and LO‐phonon shifts of GaP in the temperature field induced by a laser beam are performed and compared with measurements in a uniformly heated sample. The temperature and the stress distribution in the sample volume irradiated by the laser beam are calculated and their influence onto the phonon frequencies is discussed with the result that thermoelastic effects besides the temperature rise due to the laser beam cannot be neglected, in general.
