The induced field at an oscillating dipole near the metal surface is derived within the hydrodynamic model. Spatial dispersion and diffuseness of the electron density at the surface are included. Numerical calculations for a r s = 2 jellium are carried out, and the image plane position is determined. Results are compared with those of Feibelman and Fuchs et al.
