Using the method of moments an analytical expression for the R′ optical absorption lineshape is obtained, in quantum approach. No use of the Born‐Oppenheimer approximation is made. The electron‐lattice interaction is taken to be linear. The effects of both, E and A 1 modes are considered. It is found that the lineshape calculated using moments up to eighth order is convergent and that the presence of the A 1 mode accelerates the convergence. The calculated lineshape is more exact than those reported in the earlier works. It is studied under different conditions of temperatures and coupling strengths. The obtained R′ lineshape in KCl and LiF exhibits all the experimentally observed features.
