The displacements and intensity of charge transfer (oxygen to lanthanum) satellites of lanthanum 3d, 4d, and 4p levels are found to be different for La 2 O 3 and La 2 CuO 4 , while they are the same for other ABO 3 perovskites and La 2 O 3 . This difference is caused by the increased possibility of „mixed configuration” for lanthanum ions in La 2 CuO 4 due to d 2 z2 level of half of copper ions intersecting the Fermi level. The effect of the changes in the geometry of the environment of the cations is also reflected in the asymmetric nature of the O(ls) peak in La 2 CuO 4 which is known to contain different types of MO bonds.
