Polyacetylene chains can have defects such as kinks in their bonding patterns. As these defects are long compared with the carbon‐carbon spacing they can be described by a continuum model. In this paper the continuum model is applied to finite chains of polyacetylene, which are of greater practical interest than very long chains. A perturbative calculation shows that there are critical lengths of polymer chain for the appearance of structures containing increasing numbers of kinks. The energy of formation of these structures is also estimated.
