The commensurate‐incommensurate transition in a quasi‐one‐dimensional system with commensurability three is studied using the continuum, the mean‐field, and the one‐kink‐band approximaions. Except for special cases, the commensurate‐incommensurate transition is discontinuous in general. The lattice distortion, the chemical potential, and the spectrum of the electrons at the transition are calculated and related to known results from alternative approximations.
