The electronic properties of a KNO 3 crystal near the structural phase transition are investigated by observing ultraviolet absorption spectra. The spectra show an anomalous temperature dependence near the transition point T tr . The anomalous behaviour of the exponential absorption tails in the spectra is observed and discussed phenomenologically in relation to anomalies in the dielectric constant and lattice constant of KNO 3 .
