Abstract The magnetic properties are considered of cubic crystals of tetrahedral copper tetraclusters of the type Cu 4 OX 6 L 4 , in the case when each copper ion is orbitally nondegenerate, under the assumption of strong spin‐vibrational interaction with E‐type cluster distortions. It is shown that within this model for all possible values of the exchange parameters the temperature dependence of the effective magnetic moment of the system is monotonous, and hence the four‐centre (pseudo) Jahn‐Teller effect is concluded to be the most probable reason of the anomalous magnetic properties of the copper tetraclusters.
