The phase transitions of ferroelectric liquid crystals in external fields (electric and magnetic) is studied, using the Landau free energy expansion for the order parameter. The commensurate‐incommensurate phase transition, in the presence of a magnetic field using solitons is analysed in detail. The normal‐incommensurate phase transition in the presence of electric and magnetic fields is also studied. The fluctuation spectrum of the soliton lattice is calculated, and a new branch of oscillation is found.
