Abstract A phenomenological model that takes into account both, two‐ and three‐body interactions is developed for the calculation of the phonon frequency spectra of a homogeneously strained facecentred cubic (f.c.c.) crystal. The model is tested by applying it to the calculation of phonon dispersion curves and lattice heat capacity of the transition metals platinum and palladium. The theoretical results are found to agree well with the corresponding experimental data.
