The usual quasi‐classical description of transport processes does not contain directly the influence of wave functions. But the latter becomes important near interfaces. Due to the potential barrier at the semiconductor‐insulator interface the wave functions go to zero there. An expression is derived for transport coefficients which (a) within the local‐density approximation coincides in the bulk material with the standard formula and (b) contains the behaviour of the wave functions near the interface via the averaged local density‐of‐states matrix. The new approximation is discussed for a simple case. Applications and the inclusion of diffuse surface scattering will be treated in further papers.
