The energy of intervalley Jahn‐Teller effect (IVJTE) accompanying the O h 5 –C 3v 5phase transition in (GeTe) 1– x (AgSbTe 2 ) x solid solutions ( x = 0.06) is calculated on the base of a band‐edge structure model of the group IV‐tellurides with T–L splitting in the rhombohedral phase. The heat effect of the transition is measured. It is shown that the contribution of the IVJTE energy in the whole energy balance of phase transition is ≈ 40%. This energy is used for the uniaxial deformation of a crystal.
