A simple phenomenological model is applied to interpret the experimentally measured off‐symmetry phonon frequencies of copper. It is emphasized that a truly acceptable theoretical model should not only give good results in the symmetry directions but must also be capable of a satisfactory reproduction of frequencies in the off‐symmetry directions.
