A forbidden transition 2 P 3/2 –4f (unoccupied) is detected in the L‐absorption spectra of compounds of rare earth metals Tb and Dy, indicating the presence of an open 4f shell in these compounds. the location of these 4f shells is found to shift towards the high‐energy side when these metals form compounds.
