Abstract The velocity dependence of the electronic stopping power of solids for low velocity atoms is discussed. It is shown that the stopping power contains not only the velocity‐proportional term (friction term) but also the velocity anti‐proportional term (recoil term). Calculations of the stopping power using the Born approximation, phase shift, and the Anderson model are presented.
