Reflection spectra of PbWO 4 crystals vs. the temperature are studied over the 700 to 1000 cm −1 frequency region. On the basis of an invertibility criterion of the oscillator obtained in the present paper, the anomaly in the reststrahlen band in the reflection spectrum is found to be connected with a strong frequency dependence of the damping Γ(Ω) of the transverse optical vibration. A possible decay channel for an intramolecular excitation corresponding to the peak of the function Γ(Ω) is proposed.
