Polarized absorption spectra of single crystals of Ni 2 NbBO 6 in the range 5000 to 28000 cm −1 are measured at liquid‐helium temperature. The bands are interpreted in terms of “ligand field transitions” with a site perturbation expressed as the sum of two contributions, one major connected to a reduction of symmetry O h → C 3v and one minor connected to C 3v → C s . By assuming that most of the intensity derives from the static low symmetry distortion a full explanation of the intensity behaviour of the bands with the polarisation of the light is given.
