Below T N = 1.5 K Er 2 O 2 SO 4 is an Ising antiferromagnet. In contrast to other RE 2 O 2 SO 4 (RE = = Dy, Ho, Tb, Gd) the ordering is along the crystallographic c ‐axis. In external magnetic fields applied along c the antiferromagnetic phase is left via intermediate ferrimagnetic structures with multiples of 1/8 of the saturation magnetisation and enters finally the paramagnetic saturated state. The main features of the experimental phase diagram are reproduced by mean field calculations.
