The ellipsometric equation for uniaxial crystals with the optic axis parallel to the reflecting surface is used to calculate the dielectric function from experimental data on α‐quartz in the range 700 < ω < 1200 cm −1 . The experimental arrangement as well as the mathematical procedure are presented. The results confirm the known mode frequencies including the selection rules and show above the influence of many‐particle effects. The latter can be described approximately as for electronic spectra.
