The phase diagrams that occur in a semi‐infinite ferromagnetic Ising model with enhanced surface couplings are studied by means of a new‐type of effective‐field theory. A considerable qualitative and to a certain extent quantitative improvement on the traditional mean field phase diagram is obtained. The results obtained by using such a simple formalism are also in good agreement with more sophisticated techniques.
