Below T n ‐ 3.4 K Ho 2 O 2 SO 4 is antiferromagnetic with canted moments. The magnetic properties are strongly influenced by a crystal field splitting of the two lowest electronic Ho 3+ states. The details of the magnetic short‐range order as well as the occurrence of intermediate ferrimagnetic phases in external magnetic fields may be explained within a model which takes into account the crystal field splitting as well as dipole and superexchange interactions up to third‐nearest neighbours.
