The absorption bands due to an isolated Se 2− —anion vacancy dipole in KI lie in the near ultraviolet range. Irradiation in the short wavelength absorption bands at 243 K is found to be responsible for photo‐chemical reactions (PCR). During PCR, an impurity—vacancy dipole is destroyed with the simultaneous formation of an F‐centre. No PCR is observed when the system is irradiated at LNT. Irradiation in the long wavelength absorption bands is found to be ineffective in producing PCR.
