Birman's theory of symmetry changes at continuous phase transitions is applied to transitions induced by representations which are connected with a non‐null star, when the high‐temperature group is I4/m(C 5 4h ). It is shown that the generalized physical tensor field criterion of Birman rules out some of the low‐temperature groups which appear in Landau's theory as well as in the theory of Birman restricted to its first two criterions (the subduction criterion and the chain criterion).
