The compounds DyMn 2 and Dy 6 Mn 23 and their ternary hydrides are investigated by means of magnetic measurements and 161 Dy Mössbauer spectroscopy. In DyMn 2 magnetic ordering disappears after charging with hydrogen gas. In Dy 6 Mn 23 the absorption of hydrogen gas leads to a strong reduction of the bulk magnetization even though the Dy sublattice remains magnetically ordered at low temperatures, with magnetic moments on the Dy atoms close to the free ion values.
