The modulation of the dielectric susceptibility of direct band gap semiconductors due to the interaction with sound waves is considered up to second order of the deformation tensor. The role of the Coulomb interaction between electrons and the holes, i.e. that of exciton states with discrete and continuous energies, is taken into account.
