From the band structures of superconductors it is concluded that the formation of Cooper pairs is connected with exchange interaction existing only in the conduction bands of superconductors. Nevertheless, the pairing is mediated by phonons. This new coupling mechanism, which does not contradict the BCS mechanism, provides an understanding of superconducting properties of materials.
