A general phenomenology of the Heisenberg spontaneous metamagnet is developed on thermodynamical basis. Analysis of the power expanded free energy of an ambigious magnetoelastic spin system reveals the crucial role of temperature terms in inducing the spontaneous metamagnetic transition. The temperature term results from the influence of the lattice vibrations on the exchange parameter. The neglecting of such a vibration effect is identified as the source o serious discrepancies involved in all existing exchange‐inversion theories.
