A report is given on the spectral reflectance of polycrystalline samples of HfC x N 1‐ x compounds in the energy range between 0.1 and 6.2 eV. The composition of the samples is gradually varied between pure nitride and pure carbide. The experimental reflectance data are analyzed by a Lorentz‐Drude model in order to determine both, the dependence of the interband absorption and of the free carrier concentration on the nitrogen to carbon ratio of the samples.
