Abstract In the second order perturbation theory the F A (II) center is considered as the F center in the field of a defect with excess dipole moment due to off‐center position of a small‐radius impurity cation. In such a model, the properties of the F A (II) center may be explained in terms of the wave‐function of greater spatial distribution for the F‐center relaxed excited state. The F‐center perturbation caused by the defect having its own small electric dipole moment (molecules of the type NO 2 − , OH − , CN − ) is also discussed.
