The L 3 absorption edge region of rare earths in rare earth—aluminum intermetallics, RAl 2 is recorded using an X‐ray focussing spectrograph. Chemical shifts are measured and valence states of rare earth ions are determined. The effective charge on the rare earth ion is estimated using Siegbahn's method. The present results are examined in the light of available reports on the RAl 2 system nsing other techniques.
