Polarized luminescence measurements are used to study the luminescent characteristics of NaCl:Pb 2+ excited into the A‐absorption band. For the E 1 = 4.01 eV emission it is found that the luminescent centers have tetragonal and trigonal symmetries due to the Jahn‐Teller effect that allows the coexistence of tetragonal and trigonal minima on the 3 T 1u APES while the E 2 = 3.29 eV emission band is due to aggregates of impurities in the {111} planes with trigonal symmetry. The charge compensating vacancy associated to the impurity gives a meaningless effect on the luminescence polarization and its position cannot be ascertained.
