Emission bands of isolated Kr and Xe atoms in solid Ar matrices are assigned to atomic 3 P 1 and 1 P 1 states on the basis of excitation and emission spectra. The temperature and concentration dependence of these spectra is used to sort out emission from distorted sites. The dependence of the lifetimes on temperature reflects the competition between radiative and nonradiative decay.
