The relative Raman intensities associated with various electronic transitions are used simultaneously with the usually considered energy levels and g ‐values for determination of the phenomenological crystal‐field parameters in YbAG and YbGG. The best‐fit parameters reproduce well all the available data but their values do not agree with the superposition model of the crystal field. It is concluded that the earlier crystal‐field calculation for Yb 3+ :YAG is impaired by the misinterpretation of the optical data.
