The magnetic ions of an anharmonic crystal are assumed to interact through the Heisnberg exchange. In the temperature dependence of the exchange constants contributions from the lattice oscillations are included in addition to the usual exchange‐strictive term. The role of exchange‐striction in the metamagnetic transition is reexamined and a new eriterion for metamagnetism is formulated. An explanation for the lattice contraction of the Mn 3 GaC compound at the matamagnetic temperature is given and a paradox associated with previous theories is removed.
