The temperature dependence of the infrared absorption spectrum of P 4 S 3 is investigated from 10 to 360 K. The internal mode frequencies have negligible temperature dependence whereas the external mode frequencies show a relatively strong temperature dependence which is almost linear. At the phase transition temperature 314 K the sharp absorption peaks due to the low‐frequency external mode disappear leaving relatively flat features characteristic of the plastic phase.
