ESR spectra and emission and excitation spectra of the MgS:Mn 2+ phosphor are measured at 6, 80, and 300 K. From ESR spectra the values of the parameters g and A are obtained: g = 2.0019 and A = −74.8 × 10 −4 cm −1 at 300 K. Furthermore, the analysis of the excitation spectra leads to the values B = 631 cm −1 , C = 3345 cm −1 , and Dq = 817 cm −1 with covalency parameter ϵ = 0.044. The value of the cubic field parameter a estimated from the shape of ESR spectra is much smaller than that theoretically deduced from the observed value of the parameter Dq .
