A macroscopic system realizing an ensemble of chain‐like recombination paths involving localized electron states is considered. The recombination process of a carrier occurring in a given chain is formulated in terms of a Markov process with absorbing state. An expression for the mean lifetime of a carrier in a chain taking account of the energy scatter of the electron states is derived. Using this expression and a density of states model the temperature dependence of the lifetime may be calculated explicitly.
