The 100 °C phase transition in Pb 3 (VO 4 ) 2 is theoretically described. The description is in terms of the Landau group theoretical formulation as extended by Birman and Jari°C. Representations from the F point are constructed from which the representation that induces the transition is identified. It is found that this representation satisfies the necessary conditions for a continuous transition. The free energy form consistent with the phase of higher symmetry is constructed as a function of the order parameter and elastic strain.
